KINGS CROSS (part 2)

(1863-1941)

The Metropolitan/Circle line Kings Cross station was a dual station that also served the City Widened lines (more recently taken over by Thameslink trains). It was situated to the east of its present location but the Metropolitan line part of it was moved to allow a more convenient interchange with the deep level stations and the main line station itself. (The Widened lines / Thameslink part of the station remained operational until 2007, when it was relocated further to the north-west, under St. Pancras station)

Construction of the new Metropolitan line station was accomplished by filling in the running tunnel to provide a concourse and diverting the tracks into old tunnels that ran outside of and parallel with the original running tunnels - the old tunnels were short City Widened Lines westerly extensions beyond the junction where they veered north to St.Pancras.

(This page deals only with the Metropolitan line part of the station. The Widened lines / Thameslink side is dealt with on its own page).

This room was built on top the old staircase - the staircase was still there, it was just hidden under the floor of this room.
